Source of Nickel in Water: Nickel is used in the manufacture of many alloys and products such as stainless steel, ceramic paint, jewelry, kitchen ware, batteries, textiles and coins. Nickel is released into the environment by power plants, metal factories and waste incinerators. Many nickel compounds are water soluble (dissolve fairly easily in water) and have a characteristic green color.
Effects of Nickel in Water: The most common harmful health effect of nickel in humans is an allergic reaction. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has determined that some nickel compounds are carcinogenic to humans and that metallic nickel may possibly be carcinogenic to humans. It is likely that nickel can be transferred from the mother to an infant in breast milk and can cross the placenta. Exposure to high levels in drinking water can cause some people to experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, and shortness of breath.
How to Remove Nickel: A WECO reverse osmosis filtration will remove nickel and other metals from your drinking water. Consult with WECO technical support to find out which solution is best for you.
