Acidic Water

Source of Acidic (low pH) Water: pH is an indicator of the acid or alkaline condition of water. The pH scale ranges from 0-14; 7 indicates the neutral point. Water with a pH value less than 7 indicates acidity and tends to be corrosive. Acidic or low pH drinking water is usually a result of natural geological conditions lowering the pH of the water supply, possibly compounded by acid rain. Acidic mine drainage and localized chemical dumping can also impact pH.

Health Effects of Acidic Water: Symptoms of low pH are bluish green stains on fixtures with copper plumbing; reddish stains with galvanized iron plumbing; and water system corrosion problems and plumbing leaks. Acidic water can leach metals like copper and lead from plumbing systems. Exposure to heavy metals can cause health problems, especially in children.
